Important Update: Navigating Recent Tariff Changes and Their Impact on Roofing Materials
Dear Valued Customer,
We are issuing an urgent update regarding significant changes to the Section 232 tariffs on imported steel and aluminum products, which are now in effect. These adjustments, announced in a recent White House proclamation, double the Section 232 tariff rate from 25% to 50%. This increase applies to goods released from customs on or after June 4th. You can review the official proclamation here.
However, it’s crucial to understand that roofing nails and other steel-based building materials can be subject to a complex interplay of tariffs. Beyond the recent Section 232 increase, other tariffs may also apply, significantly impacting overall import costs.
For all other origins of steel which is mainly for construction fasteners this will now increase on June 4 from 25% to 50%, the only exception is the UK that remains at 25%
Key Tariffs Affecting Roofing Nails and Related Products:
- Section 232 Tariffs (Now 50% from 25%): These tariffs, initially implemented for national security reasons, target steel and aluminum imports. As of June 4th, the rate has increased to 50% for most affected goods. This directly impacts steel roofing nails and other metal components.
- Section 301 Tariffs (25%): These tariffs primarily target goods from China. Many roofing nails and other construction components manufactured in China have been subject to a 25% Section 301 tariff for some time. This tariff is applied in addition to other applicable duties.
- Opioid Tariff (20%): While often referred to colloquially as an “Opioid Tariff” due to its stated purpose, this is typically a broader tariff imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), often linked to efforts to address the fentanyl crisis. If applied to your imported roofing nails, this 20% tariff would be an additional layer of duty.
This change in the US tariff policy as of today does not effect any products from any origin other than steel as detailed in the US Government proclamation which you can view in the link.
